A collection of computers, thats what you get when you have at least one geek in the house. My home is no exemption.

Contents

Internet

My internet connection is a DSL line with PPPoE protocol setup, with a modem delivered by the service providor, it is further connected to my WLAN gateway/router with some basic firewall settings (to distribute network access, I need to have network access control in this house - grumple). The WLAN unit, a 3Com office connect router, also have 4 LAN ports in addition to the WAN port and the WLAN.

WLAN

Of course my WLAN is encrypted, the SSID is changed from the default (to a somewhat cryptic code), and the admin password is changed.

  • WEP Encryption, 128bit key, not distributed.
  • MAC filtration (temporarily disabled)
  • Firewalling: Internet access enabled by default, filters added
  • DMZ enabled, routed to non-existing host
  • HackNotification enabled, sends email to me on suspicious data traffic from outside or inside.

Computers

Andy Kaufman

This is a Mac Mini, used as a media center and game box connected to a TV set. At the moment located in my bedroom. Future plans for this computer is to move it to a new living room on the top floor when we get that sorted out, or to a office/library on the same foor. The name Andy Kaufman is a reference to the pointing device, a Mighty Mouse. Mighty Mouse was the name of Andy Kaufman's first performance for the Saturday Night Live Show. Blootooth Mighty Mouse and Keyboard give the same functionality as a normal computer, a conventional TV give lover resolution than what is normal for desktop computers these days, so a HD-ready TV is on the wish list. Hope also to add AppleTV's for the other TV sets in the future. Andy Kaufman have installed Remote DVD/CD sharing software.

The computer is used to subscribe to video podcasts, watch movies, and play NWN.

  • Make: Mac Mini
  • CPU: Intel Mac CPU
  • Operating System: Mac OS X Tiger
  • Internet Connection: Wireless
    • Remote Disk Utilities installed

Baradur

A Toshiba Satelite laptop running Windows XP. Mainly used by my wife. The original power adaptor have caught fire and short circuted, so the current power adapter is a cheap multi energy adapter with a few extra connections due to non-compatible plugs.

  • Make: Toshiba Satellite Pro
  • CPU: Intel Pentium Dual Core T5500 @ 1.66 GHz
  • Operating System: Windows XP Pro SP2 (hopefully SP3 soon)
  • Internet Connection: Wireless

Buzz Aldrin

Macbook Air is the Heavy Wight Light Ultraportable Laptop from Apple. It comes with no cd drive, only one USB, and only wireless networking, but with assessory software enabling remote disk drives, so the Macbook can leech the CD or DVD drive from other Windows or Mac computers (Linux versions might exist). The name Buzz Aldrin comes from the man who was supposed to be the first man on the moon. I use this computer for my work on Openstreetmap, writing stuff, listening to music, surfing the web, and much more. I hope to get a 12V car power adapter for it, so that I can use it as a street navigator together with my GPS, as I have all the necessary cables and drivers/software installed on this one.

  • Make: Macbook Air
  • CPU: 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
  • RAM: 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
  • Operating System: Mac OS X Leopard
  • Internet Connection: Wireless

Lays

The only desktop computer in the house. Running Windows XP, and much of the time used by my step daughter. Because of the numbers of users this computer have had throughout history, it have been formated and reinstalled several times. I hope that use of good anti-virus software and a good gateway will reduce the virus threat in the future. At the moment, Avast (or Norton) is used to protect against virus, and Adaware to remove other sorts of malicious software. Future plan includes upgrading the RAM, in a hope to get the computer run smoother.

  • Make: Desktop Computer, various components
  • CPU: Intel Pentium 4 CPU, 2.8 GHz
  • Operating System: Windows XP Home SP3 (if somebody havn't installed XP pro from pirated CD's again)
  • Internet Connection: Wired

Aun's Cellphone

Yep, a Nokia N95 cellphone have access to internet via the house WLAN. It operates on Symbian OS, and most of its applications are written in Java.

Other

I have a few other computers, Rohan, which is given to my brother and the laptops Angmar, Mirkwood and Moria, which are stuck in transit, and have been for close to one year.

I have plans for making one laptop ready to use my GPS and a free map software, either as a car navigation system, or as electronic charts when I am on longer boat trips. See Openstreetmap for information about my GPS projects.
