I was made aware of a statement from RIAA through the blog techdirt. Read the two and see for yourself. Nobody in the world should be surprised that any music ends up on the internet, whether on torrent sites (such as The Pirate Bay, Torrentz, or any other), not even charity albums. I must admit that these two statements are the first I heard about the charity album “Hope for Haiti Now”, which supposedly came out for sale more than a month back. Have RIAA ignored marketing this album as they donate all the funds to charity instead of putting them in their own pockets? Read the rest of this entry »

This message is just to confirm that the site have moved. There passed a few practical problems during the move, such as limited internet access, change of work place, little time available, etc.
At time of installation I also tried to upgrade the versions of Wordpress (the blogg software) and mediawiki (used on my wiki), so this should be up to date. I will also have a look at having the various plugins upgraded (a flag showing 14 plugins with newer version….) All of this for some time ahead. At least, the blogg didn’t go offline. The old server is going down today.

I was informed by the server administrator of my host, that the current server is closing down. I have been given access to a new server, and are in the progress of moving stuff over and configuring the other site, so that everything will be ready to transfer the DNS and the database for when the old server goes offline. Brazil have done it again. They are hosting the 2014 Football world cup, and now they have been given the 2016 Olympics. But is it premature to give another big international event so close to another? Or might it be a good idea?

What do I mean by that headline? Haven’t OpenStreetMap always been international? Well, yes, but the main websites and most of its tools have been in English (and some in German only for some reason). But this is changing. Read the rest of this entry »

Planes are supposed to be the safest mode of transport in the world, but how safe is it really? The frequency of air accidents seems to be higher now than it have been in a long time. The effect of all the safety features put into force in the 80’s and 90’s seems to have passed, either because planes are used much longer than the expected lifetime, or the trafic density in the air have become too high. For some time I have taken part in a project called OpenStreetMap (OSM), which started in 2004 to make a street map of UK based on free content data and with a license that allows free copying. In the UK, Ordinance Survey are taking care of the national geographical survey, and their data is heavily copyrighted. Read the rest of this entry »

A car with three Norwegian tourists entered the favela Nova Holandia in Rio de Janeiro this weekend. It was a mistake that lead them there and the incident turned ugly. Somebody in the favela opened fire on the three tourists, and one of them was hit in the shoulder and head, and needed medical treatment when they finally got out of there.
